Bauchi state police command PPRO ASP Ahmed Wakili, has confirmed that at least 20 people were burnt to ashes today (Sunday) as a result of a fatal accident that occurred at Tirwun area of the Bauchi state capital.
The spokesperson stated that the accident was caused by dangerous driving and over speeding, adding that: “Yes, it is true there was an accident at Maiduguri -Bauchi federal highway in Bauchi State which occurred today Sunday, at about 1p.m.
An eye witnesses, told blueinknews Correspondent that the accident occured when a government vehicle collided with a commercial bus carrying 18 passengers passing by the road which caught fire and roasted the occupants.
They said 20 people in the two cars died on the spot while only two persons survived with serious inquiries.
He said the corpses of the deceased have been deposited at the mortuary of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital Bauchi,
He added that the two persons that sustained injuries were also receiving treatment in the University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi.
According to the eyewitnesses, “The multiple crashes involved two vehicles, 18 seater-bus with 22 passengers and a Volkswagen Golf”.
An official of the Federal Road safety commission, who spoke on condition of anonymity cautioned vehicle operators to always comply with traffic rules in order to avoid accident along the highway particularly in this period of mass movement.
Blueinknews gathered that the passengers of the commercial vehicle included some students carrying school text books but their identities could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report
