Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YOSIEC) has announced February 27, 2021 as the scheduled date for the conduct of Local Government Elections in the State.
Briefing newsmen in Damaturu, Yobe State capital, Chairman of the State Electoral Commission Dr Mamman Mohammed, said necessary modalities and guidelines have been put in place to ensure hitch free and violence free election amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
According to him, over 1,365, 000 registered voters were expected to participate in the exercise to produce 17 council chairmen and 178 councilors.
He described that,” let me tell you that, In our efforts to achieve this, we need free, fair, credible and peaceful election without rancor or acrimony,” he said.
Dr urged the management staff and other stakeholders of the commission to maintain neutrality during the exercise,adding that units would be relocated or merged on security grounds
He appealed to the media organisations to enlighten the public on all election parameters and the credibility of people to be elected to occupy such sensitive offices
The electoral body has given room for people living with disabilities to participate in the elections.
Though there are unconfirmed reports of political parties boycotting the elections, the major parties said they are comfortable with the preparation for the exercise and are satisfied with the process so far.
