The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence and Deputy Chairman, Senate Committee on Anti Corruption, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko says ensuring the security of lives and properties of all law abiding Nigerians is a collective responsibility.
Wamakko, a former Governor of Sokoto State spoke on Tuesday, in Sokoto, at the the finals of the Hausa Poetry Competition on Security Challenges in Northern Nigeria, organized by the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
Wamakko said:” Ensuring security is a collective agreement of all of us , the Government, the citizens, as well as alll and sundry .”
He also astressed the need for the citizens to provide credible intelligence information to the various security agencies as they need support of all and sundry .
According to Wamakko,” it is only when all hands have been put on the deck that , the menace of insecurity in the country can be adequately tackled .”
The former Governor of Sokoto State also urged the Institution to institute an Endoewment Fund that will be saddled with the responsibility of translating Scientific and Engineering books written in English into Hausa Language.
While pledging to assist the proposed fund, Wamakko stated that, no nation cam develop while relying on a foreign language , citing countries like China, Korea and Japan that had fully developed as they heavily relied in their local languages .
Wamakko, who represents Sokoto North Senatorial District further lauded the University for organizing the historic event that will help on reviving Hausa Language.
Wamakko,who was the Guest of Honour also lauded the Institution,its Management and Lecturers for ensuring the proper academic and moral development of the students .
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, represented by the District Head of Gagi, Alhaji Sani Umar, described the theme of the competition as apt and timely.
The Sultan also called for fervent prayers to get divine intervention in combatting the security challenges in Nigeria.
The Emir of Yauri, Dr Zayyanu Abdullahi, represented by Alhaji Kasimu Aliyu, stated that , the event cannot come at a better time than now when Nigeria was seriously facing myriad of recurring security challenges.
The Chairman of the Occasion, Alhaji Samaila Muhammad Mera said that , the event was critical to ensuring sustenabke peace and unity in the country .
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Lawal Suleiman Bilbis said that, the epoch-making event was organized to facilitate the return of peace and unity to the North and other parts of the nation.
Bilbis also stated that, it was the University’s contributions to reawakening Nigerians on the prevailing security situation in the country, as well as the need for all Nigerians to help in curbing the security challenges.
According to him, the forthcoming second phase of the competition will be in Fulfulde, saying, ” we want to use poetry to change the mindsets of Nigerians on peace,unity and security.
The Guest Speaker, Dr Aliyu Usman Tilde, challenged Hausa Poets to come up with various songs to help in stemming the tide of insecurity in the country.
In another Paper, Professor Aliyu Bunza of the Faculty of Nigerian Languages of the Institution also concurred with the earlier speakers on the need for collectivity in tackling insecurity.
Bunza also called for the upward review of the salaries of the security forces, just as he appealed for improving their retirement benefits, getting befitting burials when they die in the line of duty, as well as taking good care of the families of deceased Officers,among other solutions to the menace .
The highlight the ceremony was the turbanning of the overall winner of the competition, Bello Shehu Alkanchi by Mera.
Alkanchi who spoke on behalf of the competitors , commended the institution for organizing the event , pledging to sustain their efforts in ensuring the prevalence of peace and unity in the country .
